How Are Flatweave Cotton Dhurries Manufactured?
Mainly unbleached cotton yarn of 3/10s is used to manufacture flatweave dhurrie rugs. The weaving is usually done on a vertical loom. Firstly, six cotton yarns are unwound and piled together to form the finger hanks, also known as butterflies that are used as weft. The basic character of a pit loom, combined with a vertical loom, is used to weave the flatweave rugs. Each set of warp yarns is looped to make heddles that are essentially used as individual shafts to upper and lower the yarns. Women weave a great deal of flatweave cotton rugs. Traditionally, two weavers sit face to face and operate the loom. The one on the loom’s back is responsible for operating the heddle raiser and weaving one half of the rug’s width.
